whats the best way to clean heavy carbon buildup off of pistons? is there something they can be soaked in to soften them up? what about a brass wire wheel?

LOL, Yeah that's about it. I've tried soaking them in just about everything, a wire wheel is the only thing that eve worked. Just keep a light hand on
it.

Soak over night in ChemDip carburetor cleaner. Then use the brass wheel.

Depends on the carb cleaner. The serious stuff that Safety Kleen used to market would have eaten holes in the aluminum overnight, but damn did it clean parts!
Anything other than base aluminum was gone in 15 minutes, would even remove the leftover unworn tin plating on skirts.
