I WASTED a whole bunch of time the other day making two different mounts for the tanks which I wound up scratching!
I have no time to spare right now. But I did come up with something simple that makes the tanks appear to be floating. It seems quite firm as well and just may do the trick. I split some tube I had from an exhaust that could lay on the backbone. Then I welded a flat piece of steel across that could be welded to the bottom of the tanks. Its pretty well hidden actually and I like it (much more important ). I didn't have a hole saw so I drill several holes where the filler tube
goes and then used a really small worn out grinding wheel that fit in the hole.
Hey why not? No one is gonna see down into that hole anyways!
I'm planning to "Frankenstein" the tanks together in several spots with copper tubing hardlines. Should help with the cool factor. And if it don't, shoot I'll still like it!
Not quite sure what the end of the tanks and filler top will look like. Still thinking....... The petcock will be hardlined with copper tubing to the carbs to match the tank connectors. I did a little more work on the forwards as well but I'll post those pics when I have more work to show with them.

I have had this fricken nasty cough for the last two weeks and it has contributed to my lack of energy at the end of my work day when I would normally try and
work on the bike. CRAP!!!!! There is something to being able to breathe that makes working on the bike easier!
I had four young guys kinda new in the building process of cb750's stop by the shop yesterday so I lost a few hours showing them our space and telling lies. But its always great to spend some time with future friends and offering to help someone with whatever in order to encourage their young and new enthusiasm for the beloved cb750's, sohc or dohc. So when I finally got to work after the visit and a 1/2 a bag of Doritos, I decided to radius the rear fender. I've screwed around a bit with this in the past kinda but I've seen it done many times on the good ole world wide web. Sorry for the crap pic but here is where I started. I have several fenders laying around but this out of whack one has perfect width so I'll try to fix the roundness and make it work. You'll see I slash cut the fender in three inch increments so I can squeeze it into a more round shape.
So I squeezed the fender between my legs, started in the middle with vise grips on the middle cut squeezed closed and welded. I worked from the center going back and forth from side to side working my way to each end. It worked alright actually. Not perfect, but hey, its my first real try at this method and I'm happy with the results. Once I had it all tacked up I did need to break a few back open and adjust a little in spacing going on and off the wheel several times. But I finally got the roundness to somewhat match the tire radius. I then ground all the final welds down and finished with the flap wheel. There was some rounding to be done on the inside edge, which still needs a tad more shaping, but all in all is good to go!
Bada Bing, Bada Boom!

Thats a great looking fender. You know i have been thinking about your tank and i am coming around to thinking it will be very cool. Are you going for the
industrial look{keeping it all metal}or are you going with a lot of paint?I had that cough a few weeks ago ,its is hell to get rid of .Had to go to the health
care place to get it stopped.I would like for some youngsters to come by my garage and ask questions .I would have them working in no time.I think thats my
problem with finishing the 79 engine re-build.No one to talk to while i work.Keep the pics coming. It looks like you really like to weld and do metal work.Did
the bike building come before the metal work or the metal work before the bike building like Paul Sr. at OCC?

Hey did I miss a step or something? When did you put the box on there? That's the first good view of how low she's gonna sit, looks like the pipes are
just gonna be a couple of inches off the floor?

ahahahahahahaha wait till the coughing marathon kicks in! Happy I could share with ya.
The metal box where an oil bag would go? Yep, been there all along. I just messaged it a bit. It has these God aweful wart welds all over it so I did some serious grind time on it. It also had holes that needed to be filled and one side that was incomplete thats finished now. I didn't take pics of that work but just included it in the pics when I was doing the frame work. It still needs a little more TLC though. I need to alter the back of it as well so I have something to mount the seat shock to later. I'll show pics of that work when I do it though. Oldie, glad you like the work. I haven't seen your pics yet but I think I remember from Slicks that its a wide tire ride with a Cycle One frame from Red and Kate, right? Lets see a build thread brother! I'm interested.

Well, I made the straight pipes for after the curve that run along the frame rails. I also found some nice copper 45 degree turn outs from the plumbing supply section of Menard's. It is looking a tad wide with three pipes running alongside each other on each side of the bike but with the "Lakes pipes" style presentation it looks quite "Hot Rod-ish". I plan to stagger the outletsright at the seat area. I had this brilliant idea to use the digital camera that day instead of my Blackberry. When I got home I couldn't find the damn download cord to plug into the computer. Still haven't found it so those pics are missing for the moment. I also made a copper sleeve for the neck filler on the gas tank. I used more of those plumbing supply parts to do that. Menard's did not have a copper pipe end big enough to screw into the size I was using so I had to buy a galvanized pipe end for a gas cap. When I got back to the shop I started screwing around with this cast galvanized part. I went at it with the grinder. I smoothed the entire cap. All of the casting marks, numbers, and rough surface are now gone. I even removed the stamped in word China from the rim. I smoothed the edges as well so it looks pretty cool now. Gonna need to paint it now that it isn't copper. I also figured out how to make those old Chopper Inc. grips work on the welded on pegs already on the frame. With a bit of grinding, drilling, welding, and tapping the whole deal worked out. Pics of all this stuff coming soon. Just gotta figure out a way to get them out of the camera!! I decided to take the Blackberry to shop today and work on the seat. I made a cut out from some construction paper to use as a stencil. I only have this rather thin sheet metal to work with so I decided to make a solid rod frame for the thin sheet metal to rest upon and get alot of support. In Home Depot I found an $8 industrial strength door hinge to use for the seat mount. After quite bit of wasting time in fab work I decided I needed to drill the hinge out and weld one side of the hinge right to the seat like so many others have done on their bikes. I just couldn't figure out another way and still make it look right. I'll show you the drilled out hinge system and finshed seat later in the week when I have it done. I have found I would much rather work with cleaned up metal so I use a flap wheel or wire brush on everything as I go.Or maybe I just like the way it makes my work look better than it really is!
Here are a few pics of the work in progress.
