Well Gents, I'm back at it full steam. Gonna ride this damn thing by Aug 1 for R4YL in Ohio. Or atleast I'm gonna try like hell to get it there!
After phuckin around with the rocket tanks for a bit I decided to purchase a really long tank that I stumbled across by accident. Its 29 inches long and seems to fit this ridiculous over-stretched frame I'm working on. Its a NOS Ironhorse villian style tank. Check it out.
I don't have the mounting hardware but after trying to figure out a way to mount it I came up with a simple bed frame fabbed into tank mount that seems really sturdy and stable. Its redneck engineering baby!
Finally got enough studying done on how to engineer these forward controls and decided to NIKE!
Just do it! I made little collars as the base of the swivel. You may remember this pic from earlier in the thread.
In order to have some extra support to the front and back of the weld I thought it may help to have something working like a gusset going in the opposite direction so both the shifter and brake levers wouldn't rely on the weld alone to hold it on. I scrounged up some Honda neck bearing races that worked perfectly. I needed to turn down one side slightly to make it fit though. So I let half of the collar run on the grinding wheel until it turns down enough for the race to slide over.
I then starting making the lever custom cut to fit down over the gusset. I did this for both the top side lever and the lower lever. After which I took a large flat washer and honed the inside out to fit over the collar as well to add a second gusset on the right brake side since I may need to mash on that one a bit from time to time. I really don't want my brake pedal to snap off just when I need it!
Here is how the shifter side came out with a tab welded to the inside that will attach to the shift arm. In the last pic I have added some heat and bent it to look like loose rope and a cowboy lasso bending into position for my foot.
Here is the brake side. You'll see I added heat to the top piece to bend the 90 degree angle and position the pedal properly. I also needed to make two bends in the lower portion to snake down, across the pipes and then in between the inside pipe and frame rail. I had my daughter hold the pedal in place for the pic since I won't weld this piece on until everything is set up so position is just right.
I left the shop open and unlocked when going to get a cold iced tea refill and some fat guy sneaked in and shot a pic of himself on my project. What an asswipe!!!

Wow J, that tank is perfect! It look like it was custom made just for that bike, what a great find. Have you been peeking at my book Okie engineering again! I
like the way you think on your controls gonna look great and I think you got the bases covered when it comes to strength. I know about the shop thing I had
some skinny white boy sneek into my shop and do the same thing.

Yeah, got lucky with the tank. Stumbled across a $900 tank that looked just like made by some famous name that starts with a "W" but never remember
how to spell it!!! As I was looking at it and wishing I had $900 to blow on it I realized it looked A LOT LIKE some Ironhorse tanks I've seen. So I change
my search on ebay to look at all those bankruptcy items from Ironhorse. Sure enough there is the tank and its 29 inches!! Whooo hhoooo! Perfect. And the best
part............................buy it now $74 plus. PHUCK!!!!! I gotta have it just to try for that price. I can sell it and get my money back if it
doesn't work.....or I grow a concious and don't want to use it cause I didn't make it.
With shipping...$94!!! When I get it I am like a kid at Christmas because as soon as I get it out of the 48 inch box I know its really long enough. When I set it on the bike I about shit. WOW! Its like it was made for this stupid long digger right from day one. I am afraid it looks so good (and will hold 3.5 gallons as opposed to the rockets 2 gallons) that I will not ever change it off. Screw it. I like it.
I am stoked about the controls. I actually think they may be strong enough. Nothing like re-purposing old Honda neck races for new duty. And it looks good in real life too. I just may chrome these puppies when they are done for shits and giggles.

Well i dont feel so bad about questioning the first tank now. This tank is great and the forwards are very cool. Are you thinking about the wide u shaped bars or
the long straiter ones. This will be one for the books.

I really don't care for the pull back bars that come back over the top of the tank.
I am not sure exactly what the bars will look like yet, but they MUST open up wider than the tank while coming back!!! I am not real keen on tiller bars either so something unique is for sure. Been toying around with a few ideas, none have looked good so far to me so I did not post the pics. I gotta a builders rep to keep up here so I can only show the perfect end result ya know!!!

Shit, I wish. You can so all you want about him selling out or whatever, but that guy has got some serious talent! Motorcycle Mania 3 shows him doing some
serious fab work. Badass in my book. ahahahahaahaha
Well fellas, gonna try and make a new seat with a lower back support. I still need that "extra" for pushing back but gonna try one with slightly less rise. Lets see how this next one comes out.

the bars are going to make or break this bike. i'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. the lines on this thing are great, especially with the new tank. i'd hate to see it all screwed up with a bad set of bars. if it were mine i'd maintain that angle of the forks going up and mimic the angle of the top of the tank coming back. but it ain't mine. if it were it'd have rear sets and straight up drag bars. whoa, that would be scary. great bike, great work. |

No really, I agree. The bars are gonna be kinda difficult to make look good. I have been trying a bunch of different ideas and none have really grabbed me and said HELL YES! So I keep trying to figure a way.

Well fellas, hondachopper.com had the first annual Michigan Hondachopper Meet this weekend tied together with the big Bike Time Rally in Muskegon. More than 20
hondachoppers!!!! Some of yall should really try and make some of these events. Streetracer was on his dohc and so was my Dad on his cb1000. Of course the CBX
wasn't ready so I rode the Amen.
I did get a look at many many many bar options walking among the 1000's of bikes. I think I know what I want to do now. More coming.

I did some work on the brake linkage side before the MI hondachopper meet this past weekend that I did not post yet. So here it is. I was looking around the
shop for parts and pieces of things that could help me make a clean transitional piece for the brake linkage from under the frame to over the frame for the
drum brake. I tried a few different mock up ideas but they all took up space on the rear plate that I was saving for a "glove box" concept I'd
like to see through. So after more scrounging around I found some cool chrome lug nuts laying around that were slightly smaller inside than the motor mount
bolt on the same side.
So I drilled the threads and a bit out from the inside so it would slide over the motor mount bolt nicely. I also needed to slightly shorten the length. No problem. This lug nuts outside diameter will work well to hold the levers, one going forward under and the other going backward over the hinge point. All I would need to do is weld them on and voila! Here is a pic of the modified one along side the starting piece.
Here are a few pics of the welded piece in position. Now all I need to do is shape and shorten the levers according to the linkages. Should be no problems after this point. I just got a few heim joints to help with the connections. I took a stock Harley brake pedal and cut the lever from it for the down lever and used the actual pedal part as the up lever. Old parts becoming new parts! I'll use some sort of washer/bushing under the end nut to hold the fixture onto the motor mount bolt. Hopefully there will be no problems running
the brake system off the motor mount!? I never have seen it done before but I can't see why it won't work. And it saves space and looks clean.
