Yup these pistons do seem to get scored a little around the top but should be ok. any idea yet what the metal might be from? Are you sure that all that shiny stuff that you are seeing isn't the zink that they put in bike oil. The shavings, well? That screw didn't hurt anything? OEM may be the only place to get those bearings, grab your check book and have your banker on speed dial, they just love ripping us off on that kinda shit.

I don't see any point to pulling the studs or even splitting the cases for that matter. More than likely the rings were stuck on the motor and that's why it wouldn't turn over, a good soaking with some penetrating oil for a few days would have freed them. Any idea how many miles on this motor? You can replace alot of parts that don't need replaced, fix alot of things that don't need fixed and spend a ton of money on these old bikes. Like I said before these motors are very tough and will take alot of abuse and can handle alot of miles. If it were me and the crank seems to turn over and the gears seem to be working I would stop right where you are. Give the lower case a good washing out with some kerosene, you will have to turn it all kinds of directions to get it all out, run the used stuff through a screen to see what comes out. Grind my valves, replace the valve guide seals, check my cam chains for streatch, replace the head gasket, clean up my pistons and cylinders, make sure that my cam chain tensioners weren't too cracked up, replace the valve cover gasket, pull the clutches and check them for warpage and wear then dress them up with some sand paper and a piece of glass, check my valves for clearance, make sure that my ring end gap was still with in tolerance and put the thing back together. Here is the usual story on these bikes (most bikes) around 24,000 miles the carbs need cleaned so the bike starts running bad or they lose interest in ridding it. They pull the carbs off spray carb cleaner all in them put them back on and they still don't work or they can't find anyone who knows how to work on them or it costs more than the bike is worth so the bike just sits till they get sick of looking at it. Most of the time a good tank cleaning, fuel filter, carb cleaning and adjustment and the valves set is all that they need to be running again, electrical problems aside. Your time and your money bro take it as far as ya wanna go we'll help you all that we can. me I hate to fix things that aren't broken cause they usually are when I get done fixing them

yup you gotta be the best judge on what ya gotta do since you are looking at it. Just hate to see you do a bunch of work and spend a bunch of money and spend forever looking and waiting on parts. some of these parts are just damn hard to come by.

You will have to turn the motor all different directions but most of it will come out on its own. What's left won't hurt anything
